Current Openings
The Council on International Law Order and Security (CILOS) is an independent, nonpartisan policy research and advisory organization, think tank, and publisher dedicated to responding to challenges facing global security and stability in the twenty-first century. The council, through its network of global leaders, intellectuals, and academics will shape policies and introduce strategies that uphold international order towards creating a world that is secure, stable, and free.The research fellow will conduct research over the summer on a topic of interest that aligns with the mission and areas of focus of the council. The fellow will also support the council’s leadership and board of advisors on its existing and prospective research initiatives.The application process for this fellowship includes submission of a brief research proposal (no more than 500 words). The scope and relevance of the research to the work and mission of the council will determine the duration and official title of the fellow. We are currently accepting applications for Legal Fellow, Research Fellow, and Senior Research Fellow openings.A strong candidate will demonstrate excellent research and writing skills, with a proven record of publications. Familiarity with international institutions, international legal frameworks, foreign policy, and global security policy is strongly preferred.Ideal candidates are current or recent graduates of the law school. The fellowship is also open to candidates with a background in other related fields (international relations, political science, and security studies).This is an unpaid, remote fellowship for the summer semester, with the possibility of extension based on the needs of the council. CILOS is willing to support the selected fellow in meeting any requirements necessary to obtain resources to fund their research from external sources. The Legal Fellow will be involved in providing legal advice on the overall operations of the council’s activities. This includes reviewing and refining grant proposals to ensure legal conformity as well as researching legal status, obligations, and reputational risks associated with funding sources. The fellow will also serve as a resource for CILOS leadership and its Board of Advisors, offering legal advice as needed on matter related to compliance, and nonprofit governance. It will especially appeal to those considering a career in policy, research, journalism, or academia.ResponsibilitiesReview submissions to the Opinions program and help identify those suited for publication.Edit accepted pieces to a high editorial standard, and help ensure the accuracy and originality of published work.Communicate with contributors and help manage pieces through the editorial process.Support the Council’s senior fellows across their research, writing, and publications.Prepare research, briefing, and background materials across the Council’s areas of focus.Contribute to the Council’s analysis and commentary, with the opportunity to author their own pieces where they meet the Council’s standard.

The intern supports the Council’s digital communications, editorial promotion, and audience-development work.This position is ideal for students and early-career professionals with an interest in communications, digital marketing, and international affairs who want to develop as communications and digital-media professionals. It suits those who value hands-on experience managing social media, digital content, and audience engagement for a policy institution, the chance to work closely with and learn from the Council’s team, and the opportunity to help bring serious policy work to a wider audience. It will especially appeal to those considering a career in communications, digital media, journalism, or public affairs.ResponsibilitiesHelp manage the Council’s presence across its social platforms, promoting new commentary, research, and events.Support the promotion of published work, including preparing promotional content and coordinating author and contributor amplification.Help maintain the Opinions section of the Council’s website and apply Search-Engine-Optimization (SEO) best practices to support the discoverability of its work.Assist in producing the Council’s newsletter and other audience communications.Help promote the Council’s calls for contributions and pursue opportunities for cross-promotion and partnership that expand its reach.Track engagement, web traffic, and audience growth, and help report on what is driving results.
What the role requiresEnrolled in or recently completed a graduate degree in international affairs, law, security studies, political science, public policy, journalism, or a related field; outstanding undergraduate candidates will also be considered.Excellent writing and editing skills, with a strong command of English and close attention to detail.Strong research skills and the ability to distill complex material into clear, rigorous writing.Sound editorial judgment and the ability to handle sensitive and contested subjects with impartiality.A solid grounding in international affairs and familiarity with the Council's areas of focus.The reliability and independence to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a remote setting; prior experience in a research, publishing, or editorial settings is an advantage.
