Ambassador (Ret.) Richard D. Kauzlarich

Ambassador Kauzlarich served for 32 years in the U.S. Foreign Service. He was U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He held senior posts in the Department of State, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs, and Deputy Director of the Policy Planning Staff. He was also Senior Deputy to the Secretary of State’s and the President’s Special Representative to the Newly Independent States (NIS) in 1993-94.

Following his Department of State service, he was Director of the Special Initiative on the Muslim World at the United States Institute of Peace. Ambassador Kauzlarich was also National Intelligence Officer for Europe on the National Intelligence Council, Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) from 2003 to 2011.

From 2011-2013, He served as Deputy Director, Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC) at George Mason University. Since 2014, Ambassador Kauzlarich has been Co-Director of the Center for Energy Science and Policy (CESP) and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Schar School for Policy and Government, where he teaches courses on the geopolitics of energy security and policy communication for executive leadership.
